🚨 Safety Tips – Staying Safe in the Algarve
Good news: The Algarve is one of Europe's safest travel destinations. Violent crime is extremely rare. Locals are genuinely helpful and welcoming.
👜 Petty Theft in Tourist Areas
- Pickpocketing can occur in busy tourist areas in summer (Albufeira Old Town, Lagos waterfront, markets, ferries).
- Keep phones, cameras and wallets out of open view in crowded places.
- Use a money belt or front pocket for valuables when in busy areas.
🚗 Vehicle Break-Ins
- Never leave bags, cameras, laptops or valuables visible inside a parked car, especially at beach car parks.
- Leave the glove compartment visibly open and empty to discourage break-ins.
🌊 Sea & Swimming Safety
- Always respect the beach safety flags — especially Red (no entry) flags.
- Rip currents on the West Coast are powerful. If caught in one, do not panic and swim against it — swim parallel to shore until out of the current, then back in.
- Children should always be supervised at the water's edge, even in calm conditions.
🪨 Cliff Safety
Never stand or sit at the base of cliffs or lean over clifftop edges. Rockfalls are unpredictable and have caused deaths. This applies particularly to Praia da Marinha, Praia da Falésia and the Seven Hanging Valleys trail.
