🎒 What to Pack – The Algarve Packing List
☀️ Sun Protection (Non-Negotiable)
- High SPF sunscreen (50+) — reapply every 2 hours on the beach. The Algarve UV index is extreme in summer.
- Quality sunglasses with UV400 protection.
- A wide-brimmed hat or cap for beach days and hikes.
👟 Footwear
- Trail/hiking shoes — essential if you plan to do the Seven Hanging Valleys, Rota Vicentina or any serra walking. Many paths are rocky and uneven.
- Flip flops / sandals — for beaches and towns. But don't rely on them for any trail over 30 minutes.
🧥 Layers for Evening
- Even in summer, evenings on the coast (especially the west coast) can be breezy and cool after sunset. Bring a light jacket or long-sleeve layer.
- In spring and autumn, a medium-weight jacket is very useful for mornings and evenings.
💧 Water
- Carry a reusable water bottle. On hiking trails in summer, dehydration is a genuine risk.
- Tap water in the Algarve is safe to drink, though many locals prefer bottled water for taste.
- For any trail over 2 hours, carry at least 1.5L per person.
