🏖️ Beach Tips – Staying Safe & Enjoying the Algarve Coast
⏰ Best Time to Go to the Beach
The Algarve sun is intense from late June through August. UV levels between 10h00 and 17h00 are extremely high and dangerous. For safety and comfort:
- Arrive before 10h to get the best parking, a good spot on the sand, and gentler morning light.
- Return in the late afternoon after 17h — the light is golden, the crowds thin out, and temperatures remain warm.
🌊 South Coast vs West (Vicentina) Coast
- South Coast (Faro to Vila Real) — Sheltered from prevailing winds. Calmer, warmer waters. Ideal for families and those less confident in the sea.
- West/Vicentina Coast (Aljezur, SW Alentejo) — Faces the open Atlantic directly. Powerful waves, strong rip currents, colder water. Even experienced swimmers must be very cautious. Surfing is excellent here, but bathing needs care.
🚩 Understanding Beach Safety Flags
- Green — Safe to swim. Lifeguard on duty.
- Yellow — Caution. Do not swim out past waist depth.
- Red — Entry into sea strictly prohibited. Dangerous conditions.
- Chequered (Black & White) — Beach is temporarily unsupervised (no lifeguard present).
Always obey the flags. Drownings in the Algarve almost always occur when people ignore a red flag.
🪨 Cliff & Falesia Warning
⚠️ DANGER: Never sit or stand directly at the base of the Algarve's famous golden cliffs (Praia da Falésia, Praia da Marinha, etc.). Rockfalls happen without warning and have caused fatalities. Always maintain a safe distance, especially after rain.
